VAT calculation formulas

Conversions between net, VAT and gross rely on three simple relationships.

Net to gross

Gross = Net × (1 + VAT rate)

Use the rate as a decimal: 20% = 0.20.

VAT amount

VAT = Net × VAT rate

VAT is calculated from the net amount.

Gross to net

Net = Gross / (1 + VAT rate)

For example, divide a gross amount by 1.20 when the VAT rate is 20%.

The applicable VAT rate depends on the product or service, jurisdiction and tax situation.

See the detailed explanation

Convert net to gross

Add VAT to the net amount using the coefficient that matches the rate.

  • 20% → multiply net by 1.20
  • 10% → multiply net by 1.10
  • 5.5% → multiply net by 1.055
Understand the calculation

Find net from gross

To remove VAT already included, divide gross by the VAT coefficient rather than subtracting the percentage directly.

  • Gross ÷ 1.20 at 20%
  • Gross ÷ 1.10 at 10%

Fonctionnement

Come funziona questo strumento?

The calculation is centralized in a shared engine. The interface simply tracks the value you last edited — net, VAT or gross — and recalculates the other two.

Choose a preset VAT rate or enter your own custom rate.

The multi-rate comparison reuses the same engine from the current net amount to keep every result consistent.

Consigli e buone pratiche

  • To remove VAT from a gross price, do not subtract the percentage directly: use Gross / (1 + rate).
  • Displayed amounts are rounded to two decimals for readability while the engine keeps calculation precision.
  • For margin analysis, net amounts are generally used so collected VAT is not confused with margin.

Domande frequenti

How do I convert net to gross?

Multiply the net amount by 1 plus the VAT rate as a decimal. At 20%, €100 net becomes €120 gross.

How do I find net from gross?

Divide gross by 1 plus the VAT rate. At 20%, €120 divided by 1.20 gives €100 net.

How do I calculate only the VAT amount?

Multiply the net amount by the VAT rate as a decimal. €100 net at 20% gives €20 VAT.

Why should I not simply subtract 20% from a gross price with 20% VAT?

Because the 20% was calculated on the net amount, not on gross. €120 gross at 20% corresponds to €100 net, not €96.

Is VAT part of the commercial margin?

Commercial margin is generally analysed using net amounts. Collected VAT is therefore not treated as margin.
