How does this tool work?

Adding 2 h 45, 1 h 30 and 50 min is not ordinary decimal addition because minutes use base 60. This calculator totals several durations and shows the same result in three useful forms.

Each row is converted to minutes using hours × 60 + minutes. All minutes are added, then the total is converted back to whole hours and remaining minutes. Example: 2 h 45 + 1 h 30 + 0 h 50 = 305 minutes = 5 h 05 = about 5.08 decimal hours.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter each duration

Provide hours and minutes in separate fields for each row.

  2. Add rows when needed

Up to ten durations can be included in one calculation.

  3. Keep minutes in base 60

    Minutes must stay between 0 and 59; enter 1 h 30 rather than 0 h 90.

  4. Read the normalized total

The main result stays in hours and minutes even when the sum exceeds 24 h.

  5. Use the right representation

Use h:mm for reading and decimal hours for rates, spreadsheets or further arithmetic.

Adding in base 60

Each duration is turned into minutes; the total is then split back into hours and minutes.

Total in minutes

T = Σ (hᵢ × 60 + mᵢ)

Total in hours and minutes

H = ⌊T / 60⌋ ; M = T mod 60

Total in decimal hours

T / 60

hᵢ, mᵢ
hours and minutes of row i
T
total in minutes
H, M
whole hours and remaining minutes of the total

Use cases

Total several days

Add known daily durations without entering start and end clock times.

Add tasks or sessions

Combine appointments, shifts, interventions or sessions expressed in hours and minutes.

Prepare a timesheet

Get h:mm and decimal-hour totals before copying them into a timesheet or invoice.

Check manual arithmetic

Verify a duration sum and catch mistakes caused by carrying 60 minutes into one hour.

Handle totals over 24 h

Durations can exceed one day because this tool adds elapsed time, not clock-of-day values.

Examples

Three tasks

165 + 90 + 50 = 305 minutes; 305 = 5 × 60 + 5.

Input

2 h 45 + 1 h 30 + 0 h 50

Result

5 h 05 · 305 min · 5.08 h

A five-day week

468 × 5 = 2,340 minutes, exactly 39 hours.

Input

5 × 7 h 48

Result

39 h 00 · 2,340 min · 39 h

Carrying minutes

45 + 30 = 75 minutes, so 1 h 15 is carried into the hours.

Input

1 h 45 + 0 h 30

Result

2 h 15

Tips and best practices

  • 2 h 30 equals 2.5 decimal hours, not 2.30 h.
  • Enter 90 minutes as 1 h 30 in this calculator.
  • Totals may exceed 24 h because they represent accumulated duration.
  • Use the time-duration calculator for the difference between start and end clock times.
  • Use the decimal-hours converter to convert one duration between h:mm, decimal and hundredths.
  • This tool adds positive durations only; it does not subtract a line.
  • A shared link preserves the entered duration list so the recipient can reopen the same calculation.

Frequently asked questions

Why does 1 h 45 + 0 h 30 equal 2 h 15?

Because 45 + 30 = 75 minutes, which is 1 hour and 15 minutes; the extra hour is carried automatically.

Can I add more than 24 hours?

Yes. A duration is not limited to one day, so 30 h or 50 h are valid totals.

Can I type 90 in the minutes field?

No. The minutes field is the remainder part of a duration and accepts 0 to 59. Enter 1 h 30 for 90 minutes.

How is this different from the decimal-hours converter?

The converter changes one duration from one representation to another; this tool adds several durations first.

How is this different from the work-hours calculator?

The work-hours calculator starts from clock times and breaks. Here you enter already-known durations.

How are decimal hours calculated?

Total minutes are divided by 60. For example, 305 ÷ 60 = 5.0833 h before display rounding.

How many durations can I add?

The current interface supports up to ten rows in one shareable calculation.

Are my durations uploaded?

No. The calculation runs locally in the browser.
