Word and character counter

Count the words, characters, lines, sentences and paragraphs of a text without copying it into an online service. The counter updates with every change and also shows an estimated reading time. Use it to check a length requirement, prepare a post or compare several versions of a text.

Paste your text into the input field: the statistics are recalculated automatically, with no button to press. The character count with spaces measures the total length; the count without spaces separates the text from the blanks. A word is any sequence of characters between spaces, so “don’t” or “well-known” count as one word. Lines follow the line breaks you typed, while paragraphs and sentences depend on the separators the analyser recognises. The reading time is an estimate based on a conventional speed of 200 words per minute, rounded up to the next minute; it does not measure your own reading speed. For a form with a character limit, check whether the platform also counts spaces and line breaks. For an essay or an article, compare the required word count with the one shown here. Counting conventions vary between editors, especially for apostrophes, hyphens, emoji and multilingual text. The tool does not judge style or relevance: it provides quantitative indicators only.
