Convert FLAC to MP3: reduce audio file size

FLAC and MP3 serve different goals. FLAC preserves the decoded signal losslessly; MP3 prioritizes compact files and broad compatibility.

FLAC versus MP3

FLAC compression is lossless. MP3 discards information to reduce size further. Converting FLAC → MP3 is therefore useful for creating a lightweight derivative while keeping the FLAC as archive or master.

Convert FLAC to MP3 locally

Import the FLAC in the audio converter, select MP3 and run the operation. The required engine is loaded in the browser and the audio stays local. The main Audio guide explains the rest of the Audio family.

When should MP3 be the final step?

If you need trimming or volume adjustment, work from the FLAC first and encode MP3 last:

FLAC source → trim / volume → MP3 delivery copy

This can be automated in the Workspace. Do not expect converting that MP3 back to FLAC to restore the original; MP3 to FLAC explains why.

Key point

FLAC → MP3 is a sensible way to create a smaller copy. Keep the original FLAC when preservation matters.
