MP3 is compact and widely supported, while WAV is often easier to use as a working format. Converting MP3 to WAV can therefore be useful, but it cannot restore information already discarded by MP3 compression.

Why convert MP3 to WAV?

MP3 uses lossy compression. A typical working WAV stores decoded PCM audio without that compression. The WAV is larger and convenient for processing, but its fidelity cannot exceed the MP3 source.

When is WAV useful?

Use WAV when an editor or workflow expects PCM, when you plan to trim or merge audio, or when you want to avoid another lossy encoding during intermediate steps. For listening or sharing only, keeping the MP3 is usually more sensible.
