This converter turns feet into inches and inches into feet: type a value in either field and the other updates instantly. It is mostly used to read US and UK heights and dimensions: a person's height (5′9″), the height of a ceiling or a door, the length of a board or a cable, or the size of a piece of furniture, where feet and inches are often written together or as decimal feet.
Feet and inches are linked by an exact ratio: 1 foot = 12 inches, so 1 inch = 1/12 foot ≈ 0.083333 foot. Both are tied to the metric system by the 1959 international yard and pound agreement: 1 foot = 0.3048 m exactly and 1 inch = 25.4 mm exactly.
To go from feet to inches, multiply by 12; to go from inches to feet, divide by 12. For a measurement in feet and inches such as 5′9″, the formula is inches = 5 × 12 + 9 = 69 inches. For a number of inches such as 69, the feet are the whole part of 69 ÷ 12 (5) and the inches are the remainder (9).
For a quick estimate, multiply feet by 10 then add 20%: 6 ft ≈ 60 + 12 = 72 in. To get a height in centimeters, remember 1 ft ≈ 30.5 cm and 1 in ≈ 2.5 cm: 5′9″ ≈ 152.5 + 22.5 = 175 cm.
Watch out for decimal feet: 5.5 ft is indeed 5 ft 6 in, but 5.6 ft is 5 ft 7.2 in (0.6 × 12), not 5 ft 6 in. The two notations are not interchangeable. The symbols ′ (foot) and ″ (inch) should not be confused with arcminutes and arcseconds, which are written the same way.
In decimal feet or in inches; for 5′9″, enter 69 inches or 5.75 feet.
The other field updates on every keystroke, using the exact ratio of 12 inches per foot.
Below the converter, the table lists common equivalents in both directions, handy for spotting a height or a ceiling.
The ratio between feet and inches is exact: 12 inches per foot. Decimal feet and the feet-and-inches notation convert with the same formula.
