Unit conversion is everywhere: kilometres to miles before a trip, kilograms to pounds, litres to gallons, Celsius to Fahrenheit, bars to psi or gigabytes to gibibytes. The arithmetic is often simple, but mistakes happen because not every family follows the same rules.

Length
Length conversions are linear. In the metric system, prefixes make relationships particularly straightforward:
- 1 km = 1,000 m;
- 1 m = 100 cm;
- 1 cm = 10 mm.
Imperial and US customary units require fixed conversion factors. One international mile equals exactly 1.609344 km.

Similarly, one inch equals exactly 2.54 cm and one foot equals 12 inches.
Area
Area conversions square the underlying length factor. This is why 1 m² is not 100 cm² but 10,000 cm²: one metre is 100 centimetres in each of two dimensions.
Common units include square millimetres, square centimetres, square metres, square kilometres, hectares, acres and square feet.

Volume
Volume adds a third dimension. One cubic metre equals 1,000 litres, while one litre equals 1,000 millilitres.
US and imperial gallons are not the same quantity, so always check which system a source uses.

Mass
Metric mass units follow decimal prefixes:
- 1 kg = 1,000 g;
- 1 g = 1,000 mg;
- 1 tonne = 1,000 kg.
For international conversions, 1 kilogram is approximately 2.20462 pounds.

Temperature
Temperature is different from most unit families because conversions require both a scale factor and an offset.
Celsius to Fahrenheit uses:

Therefore 0 °C = 32 °F and 100 °C = 212 °F.

Speed
Common speed units include metres per second, kilometres per hour, miles per hour and knots.
1 m/s = 3.6 km/h, while 100 km/h is approximately 62.14 mph.

Time
Time is not fully decimal: 60 seconds make a minute, 60 minutes make an hour and 24 hours make a day. This is why blindly applying powers of ten does not work.

Angles
Degrees and radians are the most common angle units. A complete revolution is 360°, (2\pi) radians or 400 gradians.

Pressure
Pressure appears in weather, tyres, industrial equipment and science. Common units include pascals, kilopascals, bars, atmospheres and psi.
1 bar = 100,000 Pa and is approximately 14.5038 psi.

Energy and power
Energy and power are related but different quantities. Energy measures an amount; power measures the rate at which energy is transferred.
Energy units include joules, kilojoules, watt-hours and kilowatt-hours. Power units include watts and kilowatts.
Never convert energy directly to power without a time dimension.

Force and torque
The SI unit of force is the newton. Other systems use units such as pound-force.
Torque combines force and distance and is commonly expressed in newton-metres or pound-feet. Although the notation contains metres, torque is not simply an energy conversion.

Frequency and acceleration
Frequency is measured in hertz and its multiples. Acceleration is commonly expressed in m/s², ft/s² or multiples of standard gravity.
These families are especially useful in engineering and scientific calculations.
Density and flow rates
Density relates mass to volume, for example kg/m³ or g/cm³. Flow rates describe how much volume or mass passes per unit of time.
Because these are compound units, checking both numerator and denominator is essential.
Digital storage: MB is not MiB
Digital units are a frequent source of confusion.
Decimal prefixes use powers of 1,000:
- 1 kB = 1,000 bytes;
- 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes;
- 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes.
Binary prefixes use powers of 1,024:
- 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes;
- 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes;
- 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes.
So MB and MiB are not synonyms.

Data rates
Storage measures an amount of data; data rate measures data per unit of time. Bits per second and bytes per second must also be distinguished: one byte contains eight bits.
This matters when comparing network speeds and file-transfer rates.

Electrical units
The universal converter also groups useful electrical families such as current, voltage, resistance, capacitance and inductance. Prefixes such as milli-, micro-, kilo- and mega- are particularly common here.
The conversion remains within the same physical quantity. Converting volts to amperes, for example, is not a unit conversion: it requires additional electrical information.
Fuel consumption
Fuel economy is an unusual conversion family because some units express distance per fuel while others express fuel per distance. L/100 km and mpg therefore have an inverse relationship rather than a simple multiplier.
This is exactly the kind of case where a dedicated conversion engine is safer than mental arithmetic.

Decimal separators and precision
Depending on locale, users may type 12.5 or 12,5. A good converter should accept familiar input while keeping calculations numeric.
Results should also avoid misleading precision. Displaying dozens of decimal places does not make a measurement more accurate than its source data.
Common conversion mistakes
The most frequent errors are:
- confusing squared or cubed units with linear units;
- mixing US and imperial gallons;
- treating Celsius/Fahrenheit as a simple multiplier;
- confusing bits and bytes;
- treating MB and MiB as identical;
- converting between different physical quantities as if they were units of the same quantity.
The safest approach is to identify the physical quantity first, then select the source and destination units within that family.
