For the French brevet in 2027, school candidates receive a final mark out of 20 from 40% continuous assessment and 60% final examinations. Each component is calculated separately before they are combined. The method is neither a simple average of every mark nor the former total out of 800 points.
This guide covers ordinary school candidates and independent candidates. International sections, Franco-German schools and examination accommodations may require additional provisions.
Calculate continuous assessment from the whole school year
Continuous assessment uses the average of annual averages in compulsory subjects taken in troisième, the final year of French lower secondary school. A single term’s overall average is not a substitute. Results may also be harmonised before the examination board’s decision.
The 2027 instructions require each annual subject average to be rounded up to the next hundredth when it is taken into account: 13.001 becomes 13.01. Use the officially transmitted figures where available.
How an elective contributes
Points above 10/20 in one eligible elective or French Sign Language can be added to the sum of annual subject averages, before division by the number of compulsory subjects. Where several electives were taken, the best average is used. The continuous-assessment average cannot exceed 20.
For example, 12 compulsory subjects with annual averages summing to 168 give 168 ÷ 12 = 14/20. An elective at 16 adds 16 − 10 = 6 points, producing (168 + 6) ÷ 12 = 14.5/20.
It does not add six points directly to an average out of 20 or become a thirteenth compulsory subject. This elective example is separate from the complete calculation below, which uses continuous assessment of 14.
Weight the 2027 final examinations

The examination average is 131.5 ÷ 10 = 13.15/20. Science covers two disciplines selected from physics-chemistry, life and earth sciences, and technology, announced under the official timetable. The oral belongs to the examination component.
Final examination marks are taken into account after rounding up to the next whole point: a corrected mark of 13.2 is retained as 14. Enter the retained examination mark in a simulation; do not confuse this rule with displaying a calculated average to decimal places.
Combine the components
With 14/20 for continuous assessment and 13.15/20 for examinations:
14 × 0.40 + 13.15 × 0.60 = 5.6 + 7.89 = 13.49/20
Use the brevet 2027 calculator with your own figures. Subject coefficients establish the examination average first; the 40/60 weighting is applied afterwards. Do not apply the same weight twice.
Read pass and honours thresholds
| Final average |
Outcome at that threshold |
| Below 10/20 |
Not passed |
| 10 to below 12 |
Passed without honours |
| 12 to below 14 |
Assez bien |

| 16 to below 18 |
Très bien |
| 18 or above |
Très bien avec les félicitations du jury |
The 13.49/20 example falls in the assez bien band. A simulation locates the result; the board makes the official award.
A two-point improvement in mathematics, coefficient 2, increases the examination average by 2 × 2 ÷ 10 = 0.4, and the final average by 0.4 × 0.60 = 0.24. The same two-point improvement in EMC, coefficient 0.5, adds only 0.06 to the final average.
Independent candidates use a different calculation
For independent candidates, written examinations contribute 100%, with no continuous assessment. A foreign-language written examination, coefficient 2, replaces the school oral. The other coefficients remain as shown.
Marks of 12 in French, 10 in mathematics, 13 in history-geography, 14 in EMC, 15 in science and 11 in the foreign language give:
(12 × 2 + 10 × 2 + 13 × 1.5 + 14 × 0.5 + 15 × 2 + 11 × 2) ÷ 10 = 12.25/20
Do not add a coursework component. Select the profile that matches the candidate’s registration.
Prepare a reliable scenario
Check candidate status, annual averages, retained examination marks and electives. Separate known results from forecasts, especially near an honours threshold.
For assessments feeding into subject averages, see weighted grade averages. The later French bac 2027 has different subject and elective rules.
Common questions
Is the 2027 brevet still calculated out of 800? No. The method described uses a final average out of 20.
Does an elective at 8/20 subtract two points? No. In this scheme, only points above 10 can contribute an elective supplement.
Can a first-term average be used for planning? As a provisional assumption, yes. Keep it distinct from the final annual continuous-assessment component.
Is an absent examination simply ignored? No. The ordinary rules assign zero; authorised replacement examinations may be possible for force majeure. Check the candidate’s actual situation.
