How does this tool work?

This simulator applies the French Diplôme national du brevet rules for the 2027 session. School candidates are assessed with 40% continuous assessment based on 12 compulsory Year 9 subject averages and 60% final exams. You can enter one official continuous-assessment average or each subject separately, add an optional-subject bonus and leave unknown grades blank to see what average is still required.

For a school candidate, continuous assessment is the mean of the 12 yearly averages of troisième, all with the same weight, plus a bonus when an optional subject is above 10. It makes up 40% of the final grade. The final exams make up 60%: French, mathematics and science at coefficient 2, the oral at 2, history-geography at 1.5 and moral and civic education at 0.5.

The final grade is therefore 0.4 × continuous assessment + 0.6 × exam average. The brevet is awarded from 10/20, with honours at 12, 14, 16 and 18. While grades are missing, the tool shows the average still needed on the remaining exams for each target.

Frequently asked questions

How is the 2027 Brevet calculated?

For a school candidate, the final average is 40% continuous assessment and 60% the weighted average of the final exams. The diploma is awarded from 10/20.

Which subjects count in continuous assessment?

Twelve mandatory subjects count with equal weight: French, mathematics, history-geography, civic education (EMC), first and second foreign languages, life and earth sciences, physics-chemistry, technology, visual arts, music and physical education.

What are the exam coefficients?

French 2, mathematics 2, history-geography 1.5, civic education 0.5, sciences 2 and oral 2. For independent candidates, the oral is replaced by a foreign language exam with a coefficient of 2.

How does the optional subject bonus work?

Only the best optional average is kept. The points above 10 are added to the sum of the 12 mandatory averages before dividing by 12, with the continuous-assessment average capped at 20/20.

What are the Brevet honours?

Assez bien from 12/20, Bien from 14/20, Très bien from 16/20 and Très bien with the jury’s congratulations from 18/20.

Can I enter my three term averages?

The official calculation uses the yearly average validated for each subject in the LSU (the national school record). The simulator therefore asks for this yearly average directly rather than assuming a plain average of the three terms always matches the official value.

How are yearly averages rounded?

Under the DNB rules, each yearly average sent to the LSU is rounded up to the next hundredth of a point. Detailed mode applies this rule before calculating continuous assessment.

What is the difference between 2026 and 2027?

The 40% continuous assessment / 60% exams weighting has applied since 2026. From 2027, the written papers cover the Year 9 (troisième) curriculum wherever it is in force.

What grade do you need to pass the brevet?

You need a final average of at least 10/20, based 40% on continuous assessment and 60% on the exams. Honours start at 12 (assez bien), 14 (bien), 16 (très bien) and 18 (très bien with the jury’s congratulations).

Can I use the calculator before all grades are known?

Yes. Blank grades remain outstanding and the calculator estimates the weighted average needed on the remaining components.
