How does this tool work?

This converter turns hectares into acres and acres into hectares: type an area in either field and the other updates instantly. Use it to compare farmland, a vineyard or a forest described in the other unit, to read a US or UK land listing, or to translate the size of a park or an estate.

The hectare is a unit of area accepted for use with the SI: 1 ha = 10,000 m², a square 100 m on each side. The international acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 m², or 43,560 square feet (one chain by one furlong, 66 ft × 660 ft), following the 1959 international yard and pound agreement (1 yd = 0.9144 m). So 1 acre = 0.40468564224 ha and 1 ha ≈ 2.471054 acres.

To go from hectares to acres, multiply by 2.471054; to go from acres to hectares, multiply by 0.404686 (or divide by 2.471054). Both fields stay in sync, and the swap button reverses the direction without losing the value you typed.

For a quick mental estimate, multiply hectares by 2.5 and take off 1%: 20 ha ≈ 50 acres − 0.5 = 49.5 (exact value 49.42). In the other direction, multiply acres by 0.4: 100 acres ≈ 40 ha (exact 40.47). An acre is roughly 40% of a hectare, or about three quarters of an American football field including end zones.

Do not confuse the acre with the are, which is 100 m² (1 ha = 100 ares), nor with the US survey acre, very slightly larger (4,046.8726 m²) and being phased out. Also remember that a square mile is 640 acres, about 259 ha, and a square kilometre is 100 ha, or 247.1 acres.

How to use this tool

  1. Type an area

In the Hectares or the Acres field; decimals are accepted, including for small plots.

  2. Read the conversion

The other field recalculates on every keystroke with the exact international acre factor.

  3. Use the table

The table under the converter lists common areas in both directions, handy to spot an order of magnitude without any calculation.

Hectares ↔ acres conversion formulas

The international acre follows exactly from the foot and the yard, and therefore from the metre.

Hectares to acres

acres = ha × 10,000 ÷ 4,046.8564224 ≈ ha × 2.471054

The 2.471054 factor is rounded to the millionth.

Acres to hectares

ha = acres × 0.40468564224

Exact factor, from 1 acre = 43,560 ft² and 1 ft = 0.3048 m.

Origin of the acre

1 acre = 43,560 ft² × (0.3048 m)² = 4,046.8564224 m²

One chain (66 ft) times one furlong (660 ft).

ha
area in hectares (1 ha = 10,000 m²)
acres
area in international acres (1 acre = 43,560 ft²)

Example: 12.5 ha = 12.5 × 2.471054 ≈ 30.89 acres.

Use cases

Farming and land

Compare a farm, a vineyard or a forest plot described in hectares with a listing in acres.

Property abroad

Gauge the size of a lot or ranch for sale in the UK, the US, Canada or Australia.

Planning and environment

Set the area of a park, a nature reserve or a project against English-language sources.

Reading reports

Make deforestation, crop or conservation statistics comparable when published in either unit.

Tips and best practices

  • Anchor points: 1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres and 1 acre ≈ 0.405 ha.
  • 10 acres is about 4 ha, and 100 hectares is about 247 acres.
  • A hectare is a 100 m square; an acre is a 66 ft by 660 ft rectangle, equal to a square of about 63.6 m on each side.
  • For small areas such as a garden, use the square meters ↔ square feet converter instead.
  • To check a conversion, convert back: you should land on your starting value.
