This converter turns kilometers into miles and miles into kilometers: type a value in either field and the other one updates instantly. Use it to understand a race distance given in km, a road sign or speed limit abroad, a car's range quoted in the other unit, or a distance mentioned in a European travel guide.
The mile used here is the international statute mile, fixed by the 1959 international yard and pound agreement: 1 mile = 1,760 yards = 1,609.344 meters exactly. It follows that 1 km ≈ 0.621371 mile.
To go from kilometers to miles, divide by 1.609344 (or multiply by 0.621371); to go from miles to kilometers, multiply by 1.609344. Both fields stay in sync, and the double arrow swaps the direction without losing the value you entered.
For a quick estimate, multiply kilometers by 6 and divide by 10: 50 km ≈ 30 miles (exact value 31.07). The other way, add 60% to the miles: 10 miles ≈ 16 km. Consecutive Fibonacci numbers also make handy pairs: 5 miles ≈ 8 km, 8 miles ≈ 13 km.
Don't confuse the statute mile with the nautical mile used at sea and in aviation, which is exactly 1,852 m. The US survey mile, very slightly longer, has been officially retired since 2023.
Use the Kilometers field or the Miles field; decimals are accepted, so 21.0975 km works fine.
The other field recalculates on every keystroke, with no button to press.
The double arrow flips the units; the table below the converter lists common values in both directions.
The international mile is defined exactly in terms of the meter.
km = mi × 1.609344
Exact factor, from 1 mi = 1,760 yd and 1 yd = 0.9144 m.
mi = km ÷ 1.609344 ≈ km × 0.621371
The 0.621371 factor is rounded to the millionth.
Example: 5 km = 5 ÷ 1.609344 ≈ 3.107 miles.

96.56 kmOne mile is exactly 1.609344 km, or 1,609.344 meters. This value was fixed by the 1959 international yard and pound agreement.
Divide the kilometers by 1.609344, or multiply them by 0.621371. For example, 10 km is about 6.21 miles.
Multiply the miles by 1.609344. For example, 26.2 miles is about 42.16 km, and 100 miles is 160.93 km.
A statute mile is 1,609.344 m; a nautical mile, used in sea and air navigation, is 1,852 m. A speed in knots means nautical miles per hour.
Multiply by 0.6: 80 km ≈ 48 miles (exact value 49.7). For miles to km, multiply by 1.6: 25 miles ≈ 40 km.
