How does this tool work?

This converter turns kilometers per hour (km/h, sometimes written kph) into miles per hour (mph) and back: type a speed in either field and the other updates instantly. It is handy when you drive in Canada, Mexico or Europe where limits are posted in km/h, when you read a European car review, or when you need to translate a treadmill or cycling speed between the two systems.

Miles per hour measures international miles traveled in one hour. Since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, 1 mile = 1,609.344 m exactly, so 1 mph is exactly 1.609344 km/h and 1 km/h ≈ 0.621371 mph. The factor is the same as for distances because the hour is identical on both sides.

To go from km/h to mph, divide by 1.609344 (or multiply by 0.621371); to go from mph to km/h, multiply by 1.609344. For example, 100 km/h ÷ 1.609344 ≈ 62.14 mph and 65 mph × 1.609344 ≈ 104.61 km/h.

In your head, multiply km/h by 6 and divide by 10: 90 km/h ≈ 54 mph (exact 55.92). The other way, add 60% to the mph figure: 50 mph ≈ 80 km/h (exact 80.47). On a dual speedometer, 30, 50 and 70 mph sit close to 48, 80 and 113 km/h.

Do not mix up mph and knots: 1 knot is 1 nautical mile per hour, exactly 1.852 km/h or about 1.151 mph. Boat, aircraft and marine wind speeds are given in knots, not mph.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter a speed

Type the value in the km/h field or the mph field; decimals are accepted.

  2. Read the converted speed

The other field updates on every keystroke; round to a whole number for a speed limit, keep one decimal for a running or cycling speed.

  3. Check the table

The double arrow swaps the direction, and the table below the converter lists the most common speed limits in both units.

km/h ↔ mph conversion formulas

Speed converts with the same factor as distance, since the hour is shared by both units.

mph to km/h

km/h = mph × 1.609344

Exact factor, derived from 1 mi = 1,609.344 m.

km/h to mph

mph = km/h ÷ 1.609344 ≈ km/h × 0.621371

0.621371 is rounded to six decimals.

v km/h
speed in kilometers per hour
v mph
speed in international miles per hour

Example: 110 km/h = 110 ÷ 1.609344 ≈ 68.35 mph.

Use cases

Driving abroad

Translate posted limits in Canada, Mexico or Europe when your speedometer reads mph, or the reverse in a rental car.

Running and treadmills

Convert a treadmill setting in mph into km/h to follow a metric training plan, or vice versa.

Car specs and reviews

Compare top speeds and performance figures quoted in km/h by European manufacturers.

Sports and weather

Understand a serve speed, a pitch speed or a wind gust reported in km/h by international media.

Examples

Canadian highway

100 ÷ 1.609344 ≈ 62.14 mph, the usual limit on Canadian freeways.

Input

100 km/h

Result

62.14 mph

US interstate

65 × 1.609344 ≈ 104.61 km/h, a common rural interstate limit.

Input

65 mph

Result

104.61 km/h

European town center

50 ÷ 1.609344 ≈ 31.07 mph, the default urban limit in most of Europe.

Input

50 km/h

Result

31.07 mph

Treadmill run

6 × 1.609344 ≈ 9.66 km/h, which is a 10-minute mile or about 6:13 per kilometer.

Input

6 mph

Result

9.66 km/h

French autoroute

130 ÷ 1.609344 ≈ 80.78 mph, the dry-weather limit on French motorways.

Input

130 km/h

Result

80.78 mph

Tips and best practices

  • Quick anchors: 100 km/h ≈ 62 mph and 60 mph ≈ 97 km/h.
  • A 0-60 mph time (to 96.56 km/h) is slightly shorter than a 0-100 km/h time, so the two figures are not directly comparable.
  • At sea and in aviation, use the knots ↔ km/h converter: a knot is not an mph.
  • To turn a speed into a pace (minutes per mile or per km), use a running pace calculator rather than a plain conversion.
  • To double-check a result, convert it back: you should land on the starting speed.

Frequently asked questions

What is 100 km/h in mph?

100 km/h is about 62.14 mph (100 ÷ 1.609344).

What is 70 mph in km/h?

70 mph is 112.65 km/h (70 × 1.609344). It is the motorway limit in the United Kingdom.

How do I convert km/h to mph?

Divide by 1.609344 or multiply by 0.621371. For example, 80 km/h ≈ 49.71 mph and 120 km/h ≈ 74.56 mph.

How many km/h is 1 mph?

Exactly 1.609344 km/h, because one international mile has been 1,609.344 m since 1959.

Is a knot the same as an mph?

No. A knot is based on the nautical mile (1,852 m), the mph on the statute mile (1,609.344 m). 1 knot ≈ 1.151 mph ≈ 1.852 km/h.
