This converter turns liters into US gallons and US gallons into liters: type a value in either field and the other updates instantly. It helps you read a fuel price quoted per liter abroad, compare a car's tank size or a jug of antifreeze with a metric label, translate miles per gallon (mpg) into L/100 km, or adapt a product spec or recipe written in the other unit.
The US gallon used here is the liquid gallon, defined as 231 cubic inches. Since 1 inch is exactly 25.4 mm, 1 US gal = 231 × 16.387064 mL = 3,785.411784 mL, which is exactly 3.785411784 L (NIST SP 811). It follows that 1 L ≈ 0.264172 US gal. The liter itself is exactly 1 dm³.
To convert liters to US gallons, divide by 3.785411784 (or multiply by 0.264172); to convert gallons to liters, multiply by 3.785411784. For fuel economy the relation is L/100 km = 235.2146 ÷ mpg (US): 30 mpg is 7.84 L/100 km.
In your head, a gallon is "almost 4 liters": multiply gallons by 4 and take off 5% (10 gal → 40 − 2 = 38 L, exact value 37.85). The other way, divide liters by 4 and add 6% (40 L → 10 + 0.6 = 10.6 gal, exact value 10.57).
Do not confuse the US gallon with the British imperial gallon, which is 4.54609 L, about 20% larger: a UK "30 mpg" is a noticeably lower fuel consumption than a US 30 mpg. There is also a US dry gallon (about 4.405 L), used for grain and produce, which you will not meet at the pump.
Use the Liters or the US gallons field; decimals are accepted, for example 12.5 gal.
The other field updates as you type; round to two decimals for a price or a fill-up, to a whole number for a rough idea.
The table under the converter lists common values (1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 1,000) in both directions, handy for typical fill-ups of 10 to 20 gallons.
The US liquid gallon is defined in cubic inches, so it is tied exactly to the meter.
L = gal × 3.785411784
Exact factor, from 1 US gal = 231 in³ and 1 in = 2.54 cm.
gal = L ÷ 3.785411784 ≈ L × 0.264172
The 0.264172 factor is rounded to the millionth.
L/100 km = 235.2146 ÷ mpg
Derived from 100 × 3.785411784 ÷ 1.609344.
Example: 15 US gal = 15 × 3.785411784 ≈ 56.78 L; and 50 L = 50 ÷ 3.785411784 ≈ 13.21 US gal.
Compare a fuel price shown per gallon with the per-liter prices used in most of the world.
Turn a spec sheet in miles per gallon into L/100 km, and the other way round.
Convert the capacity of products sold by the gallon: paint, antifreeze, washer fluid, oil jugs, drums.
Adapt recipes, paint mixes or cleaning-product dilutions given in gallons or quarts (1 gal = 4 quarts).
1 × 3.785411784 = 3.7854 L, the value to remember.

7.84 L/100 kmOne US (liquid) gallon is exactly 3.785411784 L, about 3.79 L. It is defined as 231 cubic inches.
Divide the liters by 3.785411784, or multiply by 0.264172. For example, 40 L is about 10.57 US gallons and 100 L about 26.42 gallons.
Multiply the gallons by 3.785411784. For example, 12 gallons is about 45.42 L and 26 gallons about 98.42 L.
The US gallon is 3.785 L and the British imperial gallon 4.546 L: the UK gallon is about 20% larger (1 UK gal ≈ 1.2009 US gal).
Divide 235.2146 by the figure in US mpg: 25 mpg gives 9.41 L/100 km and 40 mpg gives 5.88 L/100 km. For UK mpg the numerator is 282.481.
