How does this tool work?

Add UCAS Tariff points for common UK Level 3 qualifications: A levels, AS levels and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). The UCAS Tariff converts certain UK Level 3 qualifications into points. This calculator deliberately covers A levels, AS levels and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).

Each qualification brings a fixed number of points by grade: an A level is worth 56 points for A*, 48 for A, 40 for B, 32 for C, 24 for D and 16 for E. An AS level is worth 20 (A) down to 6 points (E), and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) 28 (A*) down to 8 points (E).

The tool adds up the points of every qualification entered. Three A levels at AAB therefore give 48 + 48 + 40 = 136 points. UK universities often state their requirements as grades (for example AAB) rather than points: always check how the offer is worded.

How many UCAS points is an A* at A level?

An A* at A level is worth 56 UCAS Tariff points under the current scale.

Does this calculator include every UCAS qualification?

No. It covers A levels, AS levels and EPQ. UCAS lists many more qualifications in its official calculator.

Must universities accept all UCAS points?

No. Each provider and course sets its own entry requirements and may require particular qualifications.

How many UCAS points are AAA or AAB?

AAA is worth 3 × 48 = 144 UCAS points, AAB 136, ABB 128, BBB 120 and BBC 112. An A* adds 8 points compared with an A.

How many UCAS points do I need for university?

It depends on the course: common requirements range from about 96 to 144 points, while the most selective courses ask for specific grades such as A*AA. Check the course page on the UCAS website.

Does the EPQ count towards UCAS points?

Yes: the Extended Project Qualification is worth up to 28 points, half an A level. Some universities also recognise it by lowering one grade of their offer.

Do AS levels still count?

Yes, a standalone AS level is worth up to 20 points. An AS taken on to a full A level does not add up, though: only the A level grade counts.
