Buying too little material can stop a project; buying far too much ties up money and leaves unusable stock. A reliable takeoff separates geometry, theoretical quantity, waste allowance and purchasing units.
Start with the right measurement

For a rectangle, area = length × width. A 6 m × 4 m surface is 24 m². When thickness matters, volume = area × thickness. A 5 cm layer over 24 m² is therefore 24 × 0.05 = 1.20 m³, not 120 m³.

Separate theoretical need from the quantity to buy
If a calculation gives 100 units and you allow 8% for cuts and breakage, the purchasing basis becomes 100 × 1.08 = 108 units. The allowance should reflect the project: a simple repetitive layout usually wastes less than a surface full of corners and cuts.
Whole items must also be rounded up. If the result is 438.2 bricks, at least 439 are required before packaging is considered. Use the brick calculator to move from wall dimensions to an estimated unit count.
Packaging changes the final order
A need for 32.4 m² does not directly tell you how many packs to buy. If one pack covers 2.2 m², 32.4 ÷ 2.2 = 14.73, so 15 packs are required.
The same principle applies to bags, pallets and boxes. Manufacturer data remains decisive because consumption and effective coverage differ between products.
