How does this tool work?

Analysing PDF information shows a document’s technical profile in a few seconds: page count, size, format version, page sizes in millimetres, title and author, number of form fields and annotations, and whether JavaScript or attachments are present. It is the check to run before sending a file, publishing it or choosing the right processing. The analysis happens in your browser and changes nothing.

The engine reads the PDF structure without saving it again. The version comes from the file header (for example %PDF-1.7); page sizes are converted from PDF points to millimetres at 72 points per inch, and each distinct size is listed only once.

Form fields and annotations (comments, highlights, links) are counted page by page. The report flags JavaScript or actions as soon as it finds an open action, automatic actions, a named script or a launch command; it flags attachments when the document declares embedded files.

A password-protected document can also be inspected: the structure stays readable even if the content is encrypted, but the title and author may then appear garbled. This inspection is neither an antivirus nor a PDF/A compliance check.

How to use this tool

  1. Import the PDF

Choose the document to inspect; it is neither modified nor uploaded.

  2. Run the analysis

The engine goes through the file structure and counts pages, fields and annotations.

  3. Read the report

The information appears below the tool; empty fields are marked as not set.

Use cases

Check a document before sending it

Make sure the title and author reveal nothing unwanted and that the size is reasonable.

Identify a page size

Find out whether a document is A4, Letter or a custom size before printing or resizing it.

Spot active elements

See whether a PDF you received contains JavaScript or attachments before opening it in other software.

Examples

A mixed A4 and Letter document

595.28 points ÷ 72 × 25.4 = 210 mm: the first page is A4, the second US Letter. Such a mix explains a badly framed printout.

Input

2-page file, one page at 595.28 × 841.89 points and one at 612 × 792 points

Result

Pages: 2; page sizes: 210 × 297 mm, 215.9 × 279.4 mm

Tips and best practices

  • If the report shows unexpected JavaScript or attachments, run the document through Sanitize a PDF before sharing it.
  • Several page sizes often point to an assembled document: Resize PDF pages can make them all match.
  • A title or author that needs fixing can be changed with Edit PDF metadata.

Frequently asked questions

Does the analysis modify the file?

No. The document is only read; no file is downloaded and the original stays intact.

How are millimetres calculated?

PDF dimensions are in points (1/72 of an inch). The tool divides by 72 and multiplies by 25.4, rounded to a hundredth of a millimetre.

Does “JavaScript / actions detected: Yes” mean the PDF is dangerous?

No, it is a technical indicator. Many legitimate forms use JavaScript for their calculations; it is a signal to be careful with a file of unknown origin.

Why is the annotation count high when I see no comments?

Clickable links and form fields are also annotations in the PDF format, so they are included in the count.

Does the tool check PDF/A compliance or accessibility?

No. It gives an overview of the main properties, not a validation against a standard.

Is my document sent away for analysis?

No. The whole inspection takes place in your browser.
