This converter turns pounds (lb) into grams and grams into pounds: type a value in either field and the other updates instantly. It is mostly a kitchen tool, for following a European or metric recipe with a scale set to grams, but it also helps with nutrition labels, the net weight of imported food, parcel weights and lab or hobby work that uses metric units.
The pound (symbol lb) is the international avoirdupois pound, defined by the 1959 international yard and pound agreement: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, which is exactly 453.59237 g. It is divided into 16 ounces (oz) of 28.349523125 g each.
To convert pounds to grams, multiply by 453.59237; to convert grams to pounds, divide by 453.59237 (or multiply by 0.00220462). For an amount written in pounds and ounces such as "1 lb 4 oz", convert to ounces first (1 × 16 + 4 = 20 oz), then multiply by 28.349523125: about 567 g.
In your head, count 450 g per pound and add 1%: 2 lb → 900 + 9 = 909 g (exact value 907.18). The other way, 500 g is a little over a pound (1.10 lb) and 250 g a little over half a pound (0.55 lb).
Classic pitfall: a "pound" in a French or German shop usually means 500 g, a legacy of the 19th-century metric pound. A European recipe calling for "une livre" or "ein Pfund" therefore expects 500 g, about 46 g more than 1 lb.
Use decimal pounds (1.25 lb) or grams; for pounds and ounces, turn the ounces into a fraction of a pound first (4 oz = 0.25 lb).
The result uses the exact factor; round to the nearest gram for a recipe, to a tenth for postage.
The table lists common kitchen amounts (¼ lb, ½ lb, 1 lb…) and, the other way, typical metric pack sizes (125 g, 250 g, 500 g…).
The avoirdupois pound is defined exactly in grams and divided into 16 ounces.
