This converter turns kilograms into pounds (lb or lbs) and pounds into kilograms: type a value in either field and the other updates instantly. Use it to read a body weight from a metric scale or a European medical record, to check a baggage allowance quoted in kilograms, to translate the load on an Olympic barbell or to weigh a parcel for international shipping.
The pound used here is the international avoirdupois pound, fixed by the 1959 international yard and pound agreement: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly. It follows that 1 kg ≈ 2.20462 lb. The kilogram itself, the SI base unit of mass, has been defined from the Planck constant since 2019.
To go from kilograms to pounds, divide by 0.45359237 (or multiply by 2.20462); to go from pounds to kilograms, multiply by 0.45359237. Both fields stay in sync, and the double arrow swaps the direction without losing the value you typed.
For a quick estimate, double the kilograms and add 10%: 70 kg → 140 + 14 = 154 lb (exact value 154.32). The other way, halve the pounds and take away 10%: 160 lb → 80 − 8 = 72 kg (exact value 72.57).
In the UK and Ireland, body weight is often given in stones: 1 stone = 14 lb = 6.35029318 kg. "11 st 4 lb" therefore means 158 lb, about 71.67 kg. Don't confuse the avoirdupois pound with the troy pound (12 troy ounces, about 373.24 g), which survives only in precious-metal trading.
Type the value in the Kilograms or Pounds field; decimals are accepted (for example 72.5).
The other field shows the conversion with the exact factor, without intermediate rounding.
The table below the converter lists values from 1 to 1,000 in both directions, handy for a series of weights.
The international pound is defined exactly in terms of the kilogram.
kg = lb × 0.45359237
Exact factor, set by the 1959 international agreement.
lb = kg ÷ 0.45359237 ≈ kg × 2.20462
