This converter turns ounces (oz) into grams and grams into ounces: type a value in either field and the other updates instantly. It is mostly used to follow a US or UK recipe with a scale set to grams, to read the weight of an imported product (coffee, spices, cosmetics), to work out a parcel weight or to compare offers priced in the other unit.
The ounce used here is the avoirdupois ounce (symbol oz), one sixteenth of the international pound. Since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, so 1 oz = 453.59237 ÷ 16 = 28.349523125 g exactly. It follows that 1 g ≈ 0.035274 oz.
To convert ounces to grams, multiply by 28.349523125; to convert grams to ounces, divide by 28.349523125 (or multiply by 0.035274). For a weight given in pounds and ounces such as "1 lb 4 oz", convert to ounces first (1 × 16 + 4 = 20 oz), then to grams: 20 × 28.3495 ≈ 567 g.
In your head, count 28 g per ounce and add 1%: 8 oz → 224 + 2 = 226 g (exact value 226.80). The other way, divide grams by 28 and take off 1%: 250 g → 8.93 − 0.09 ≈ 8.84 oz (exact value 8.82). For small amounts of spice or yeast, rounding to 30 g per ounce is acceptable.
Do not mix up three different "ounces". The avoirdupois ounce weighs 28.3495 g; the troy ounce, used only for precious metals (gold, silver, platinum), weighs 31.1034768 g, about 9.7% more; the fluid ounce (fl oz) is a unit of volume, 29.5735 mL in the US and 28.4131 mL in the UK, and cannot be turned into grams without knowing the liquid's density.
Use the Ounces or the Grams field; decimals work, for example 3.5 oz. For pounds and ounces, convert the whole amount to ounces first.
The other field updates as you type using the exact factor; round to the nearest gram for a recipe, to a tenth for postage or precise weighing.
The table under the converter lists common values (1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 1,000) in both directions, handy to keep next to the scale.
The avoirdupois ounce derives from the international pound, itself defined from the kilogram.
g = oz × 28.349523125
Exact factor, from 1 oz = 1/16 lb and 1 lb = 453.59237 g.
oz = g ÷ 28.349523125 ≈ g × 0.035274
The 0.035274 factor is rounded to the millionth.
g = (lb × 16 + oz) × 28.349523125
For a weight written in pounds and ounces, such as 1 lb 4 oz.
Example: 4 oz = 4 × 28.349523125 = 113.398 g; and 1 lb 4 oz = 20 oz = 567.0 g.
Adapt an American or British recipe written in ounces to a kitchen scale in grams, or the reverse.
Read the net weight of coffee, tea, spices or cosmetics sold in ounces and compare their price per kilo.
Convert a parcel weight to match carrier rate bands, which in the US are priced in ounces and pounds.
Tell the avoirdupois ounce from the troy ounce when a listing quotes a weight of gold or silver.
1 × 28.349523125 ≈ 28.35 g, the value to remember for every conversion.
