How does this tool work?

This converter turns yards into meters and meters into yards: type a value in either field and the other updates instantly. The yard is still used for American football and golf distances, US swimming pools, fabric and flooring sold by the yard, and British road signs, which still show some distances in yards.

The international yard is exactly 0.9144 m. This value was fixed by the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, signed by the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. A yard is 3 feet or 36 inches. In the other direction, 1 m ≈ 1.093613 yards.

To go from yards to meters, multiply by 0.9144; to go from meters to yards, divide by 0.9144 (or multiply by 1.093613). The two fields stay in sync: the double arrow flips the direction without losing the value you typed.

For a quick estimate, take 10% off yards to get meters: 100 yards ≈ 90 m (exact value 91.44). The other way, add 10% to meters: 100 m ≈ 110 yards (exact value 109.36). The gap of about 1.6% is fine for an estimate, but not for a plan.

The yard is 8.56% shorter than the meter (91.44 cm against 100 cm), so mixing them up quickly skews a calculation. Do not confuse the yard of length either with the cubic yard (1 yd³ ≈ 0.7646 m³), used for concrete, soil or mulch in the US, or with the square yard (1 yd² ≈ 0.8361 m²) used for flooring.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter a distance

In yards or in meters; decimals are accepted, for example 2.5 yards of fabric.

  2. Read the conversion

The other field recalculates on every keystroke, with no button to press.

  3. Swap or scan the chart

The double arrow flips the units; the table below the converter lists common equivalents in both directions.

Yards ↔ meters conversion formulas

The international yard is defined exactly in meters, so converting yards to meters is always exact.

Yards to meters

m = yd × 0.9144

Exact factor: 1 yd = 3 ft = 36 in = 0.9144 m.

Meters to yards

yd = m ÷ 0.9144 ≈ m × 1.093613

The 1.093613 factor is rounded.

Yards to feet and inches

ft = yd × 3 ; in = yd × 36

Exact ratios between the imperial and US units of length.

yd
length in international yards
m
length in meters
ft
length in feet (1 ft = 0.3048 m)
in
length in inches (1 in = 25.4 mm)

Example: a marathon is 26 miles and 385 yards, which is 26 × 1,760 + 385 = 46,145 yards, and 46,145 × 0.9144 = 42,194.988 m, rounded to 42.195 km.

Use cases

American football and North American sports

Convert game distances, yards gained or a field length quoted in yards.

Golf

Go from the yards shown by a rangefinder, an app or a scorecard to the meters you are used to estimating.

Sewing and home decor

Convert the length of fabric, ribbon or carpet sold by the yard into meters, or the other way round when ordering abroad.

Road signs and plans

Read a distance given in yards on a British sign or a plan, then compare it with meters.

Examples

American football field

100 × 0.9144 = 91.44 m between the two goal lines; with both end zones (120 yards) the field is 109.728 m long.

Input

100 yards

Result

91.44 m

Golf hole

400 × 0.9144 = 365.76 m for a long par 4; golf rangefinders in the US usually show yards.

Input

400 yards

Result

365.76 m

Fabric by the yard

3 × 0.9144 = 2.7432 m; 2.5 yards is 2.286 m, a little under two and a half meters.

Input

3 yards

Result

2.7432 m

25-yard pool

25 × 0.9144 = 22.86 m, noticeably shorter than a 25 m or Olympic pool.

Input

25 yards

Result

22.86 m

100 m sprint

100 ÷ 0.9144 ≈ 109.36 yards, so 9 yards more than the old 100-yard dash (91.44 m).

Input

100 m

Result

109.36 yards

Tips and best practices

  • Landmarks: 1 yard = 3 feet = 36 inches = 91.44 cm; 10 yards = 9.144 m; 100 yards = 91.44 m.
  • A meter of fabric is about 1.0936 yards, or 39.37 inches: order a little more yards than the meters you need.
  • For feet, remember a yard is 3 feet: use the meters to feet converter if you prefer that unit.
  • A mile is 1,760 yards, or 1,609.344 m: 440 yards is a quarter mile (402.336 m).
