ß becomes ss, æ becomes ae, œ becomes oe, þ becomes th and ð becomes d.

How does this tool work?

Strip accents, cedillas, umlauts, tildes and other diacritical marks from a text: “café” becomes “cafe”, “Façade” becomes “Facade” and “Łódź” becomes “Lodz”. Everything else is kept as it is, from punctuation and capital letters to emoji. The result appears as you type and the text never leaves your browser.

Unicode describes an accented letter as a base letter followed by one or more combining marks: é decomposes into e and an acute accent. The tool applies this canonical decomposition (the Unicode NFD form) to every Latin, Greek or Cyrillic letter, removes the diacritical marks and recomposes the letter. An accent typed as a separate character, common in text copied from macOS or a PDF, is removed in the same way.

Some letters do not decompose because their mark is a stroke rather than an accent. ø, ł, đ, ħ and ŧ are therefore replaced explicitly with o, l, d, h and t. On the other hand ß, æ, œ, þ and ð are not accented letters but ligatures or letters in their own right; they stay unchanged unless you turn on the option that spells them with plain letters (ss, ae, oe, th, d). A capital followed by lowercase letters is then written in title case: Ærø becomes Aero.

Only diacritics are removed. Greek stays in the Greek alphabet (ά becomes α) and Cyrillic in the Cyrillic alphabet, losing only its stress marks. й, ё, ї and ў are letters distinct from и, е, і and у and are not changed. Arabic vowel marks, Hebrew points, the vowel signs of Indian scripts, Korean, Chinese and emoji are copied unchanged, byte for byte: removing them would alter the text rather than simplify it.

Removing accents is not a full transliteration to ASCII. Curly quotes, the curly apostrophe, dashes and symbols remain. For a file name or a web address, the slug generator also converts spaces and punctuation.

How to use this tool

  1. Paste the text

Type, paste or import a text file; the result appears immediately.

  2. Choose how to handle ligatures

Turn on the option if ß, æ, œ, þ and ð should also be spelled with plain letters.

  3. Copy or export

Check words whose meaning depends on an accent, then copy the text or download it.

Use cases

Prepare an import into an older system

Some payroll, banking or labelling systems only accept letters without accents in names and addresses.

Compare or search names

Remove accents from two lists before comparing them so that “Zoë” and “Zoe” are recognised as the same name.

Name files or identifiers

Get an accent-free base before building a file name, a technical key or an identifier.

Examples

Borrowed words in English

Acute, grave, circumflex accents and the diaeresis are removed; the curly apostrophe and capital letter are kept.

Input

The café’s naïve fiancée ordered a crème brûlée.

Result

The cafe’s naive fiancee ordered a creme brulee.

Stroked letters and ligatures

Without the option, ł and ø lose their stroke but ß and œ stay. With the option turned on, the result becomes “Lodz, Orsted, Sao Paulo, Strasse, coeur”.

Input

Łódź, Ørsted, São Paulo, Straße, cœur

Result

Lodz, Orsted, Sao Paulo, Straße, cœur

Other scripts are kept

Greek loses its acute accent; the Russian letters ё and й do not change, nor do Korean, Hindi and the emoji.

Input

Ελλάδα, Ёлка й, 한글, हिन्दी, 😀

Result

Ελλαδα, Ёлка й, 한글, हिन्दी, 😀

Tips and best practices

  • Check words whose meaning changes without an accent: in French “où” and “ou”, in Spanish “año” and “ano” become identical.
  • German often replaces ä, ö and ü with ae, oe and ue. The tool writes a, o and u; make those replacements first with the find and replace tool if that convention is required.
  • Keep the original whenever the text must remain correct for readers of the language: the output is meant for systems, not for publication.
  • To keep only ASCII characters in a file name, run the result through the slug generator afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Is letter case preserved?

Yes. É becomes E and Ç becomes C; the case of every letter is unchanged.

Why are ß and œ not replaced?

They are not accented letters but a letter and a ligature. Turn on the dedicated option to get ss and oe.

Does the text become pure ASCII?

Not necessarily. Accents disappear, but curly apostrophes, quotation marks, long dashes, non-Latin scripts and emoji remain. This is deliberate: nothing other than diacritics is removed.

Is Cyrillic converted to Latin letters?

No. Only stress marks are removed. Transliterating Russian into Latin letters follows different standards and is not offered here.

Are accents typed as separate characters removed?

Yes. Whether an accented letter is stored as one character or as a letter followed by a combining accent, the result is the same.
